Sunmi & Jazz
July 27, 2008

Sunmi’s strapless gown traveled all the way from Seoul, Korea and boasted rhinestone and pearl detail with a flower accenting the back.

The bride’s rhinestone-decorated veil also came from Korea, as well as her silk flower bouquet that could easily pass as real.

Their Romance

When You Know, You Know… He Knew

Sunmi and Jazz met as freshmen while attending Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.
Immediately, the two made quite an impression on each other. Jazz found Sunmi pretty, charming and sweet, someone he definitely wanted to get to know better. Sunmi found Jazz to be cute, though she initially thought his name was Chazz before seeing the correct spelling of his moniker in his dorm room.

The pair became fast friends and signed up for classes together. Sunmi quickly noticed Jazz was generous, caring, goofy, honest and extremely persistent.

The first time Jazz asked her to be his girlfriend, Sunmi said no, because she had just come out of a long-term relationship. They drifted apart, but began hanging out again during their senior year.

After Sunmi graduated, Jazz asked a second time if she would be his girlfriend. Her response? She’d have an answer for him when she returned from a one-month trip to Korea.
Jazz patiently waited for Sunmi. He wanted to know if her feelings for him were as strong as his feelings for her. After she returned to the United States, Sunmi gave her answer over dinner. Yes, she would be his girlfriend. She knew Jazz was the right guy for her.

The couple dated for about four years before Jazz made a special early morning trip to Sunmi’s house. With Sunmi still sound asleep, he asked her parents in Korean for their approval to propose marriage to their daughter. Jazz then called Sunmi from a nearby restaurant to tell her he had a busy day ahead at work and would be having lunch with a high school friend.

For Sunmi, the only thing atypical about her day was that it happened to be her last one with her job. As usual, she took a train to downtown Chicago to start work. When she came out of a meeting, she was surprised to see several roses scattered along her desk. She immediately phoned Jazz, who claimed to have no idea where the roses came from.

“Maybe one of your coworkers decided to leave you a going away present,” he told her. Since it was Sunmi’s last day at work, she was able to leave at noon. As she exited the building, she saw Jazz waiting by the front door. He took her for a drive around the city and later to dinner at Morton’s Steak House.

The evening ended with a stay on the top floor of Embassy Suites, where Jazz popped the question. “While overlooking the beautiful Chicago skyline, Jazz got down on one knee and the rest is history,” Sunmi says.

The couple tied the knot in pure summertime sophistication at the gorgeous St. John’s Lutheran Church in LaGrange.

Bridesmaids wore strapless pink taffeta dresses with ivory sashes. The pink and ivory theme was also carried out in the blooms decorating pillars along the aisle.
“Since it was a summer wedding we wanted to incorporate pink,” Sunmi says. “We also tried to find colors that matched pink and came up with ivory and gold, which also gave an elegant vibe.”

Their Wedding

Jazz and Sunmi’s fairytale wedding was a first class affair featuring a string quartet, 250 guests and plenty of glam and sparkle.

During their more than yearlong engagement, Sunmi and Jazz visited numerous vendors and sites before settling on Abbington Banquets in Glen Ellyn. With crystal chandeliers, the venue offered spectacular décor for the couple’s reception.
“As soon as we walked into the banquet [hall] we fell in love,” Sunmi says. “To top it off, our wedding coordinator was amazing along with the staff who helped us make our wedding perfect.”
Tying in beautifully with the chandeliers and other sparkling details of the day were the favors, which consisted of delicate pink crystal roses.
Guests dined on salad, broccoli and cheese soup, citrus chicken and pasta and strawberry sorbet. Topped with an exquisite bow, the cake featured a square bottom tier with white and pink stripes. The unique design also included octagon shapes for the remaining tiers that gradually became smaller. The bride originally spotted the cake in a magazine.
“I took the picture to Abbington Banquets and told them I had to have the exact cake,” Sunmi says. “The detailing on the polygons was amazing. I didn’t want to cut the cake.”

Tables and chairs were decorated in ivory and champagne colors, with lovely blooms, candles and rose petals atop each table. A digital frame was displayed as guests enjoyed appetizers so everyone could view pictures of the happy couple.

“Our wedding was perfect,” Sunmi says. “Everything went smoothly and according to schedule.”

The newlyweds spent their wedding night in a spacious presidential suite with a private balcony. Their two-week Hawaiian honeymoon included island-hopping, site seeing, shopping and a helicopter ride over Maui.
“It was amazing,” Sunmi says. “We were able to see the different waterfalls from the sky.”

Their Advice

Don’t stress too much!
Your wedding day goes by way too fast
Enjoy all the planning and the memories

When visiting vendors make sure you go over their most recent work and ask plenty of questions
Make sure you visit multiple vendors so you can compare
If possible, talk to people who already got married and ask for their advice

Always carry your swatches around. This helped us a lot when it came to choosing flowers, shoes, whatever it was!

I believe

fairy tales DO come true.
